Try to evolve any spiders and snakes you get (the tier 1 versions are really weak, but they become giant tier 3 or 4 versions if you get them a gold medal, which are amazing.) Other summons are better used as cannon fodder to keep enemies from killing your hunters. Recommended strategy is to build plenty of hunters and summon lots of animals. (Very fast and armed with longbows which don't have a range penalty.) And their extra magic income is a great fit for a summoning class. Their hunters are just about the best tier 1 units in the game. But they slow down a bit in the end game and can't keep up with production classes like warlord if you let the game drag on for 100 turns. Archruids are kind of the opposite of warlords: they're very strong early on, with healing heroes and summoned animals and fast population growth. (Human and Dwarf support units heal, Orcs heal naturally whenever they win a battle.) They do best with races that have some sort of healing ability, like humans, Dwarves or Orcs. Warlord is a great class, but a bit slow to start.
